The State of Inclusive Restrooms, 2026

Published · Data as of · CC BY 4.0

In the 21 states with a bathroom ban, Allgenda's directory records 6.7 all-gender restrooms per 100,000 residents; in the 29 states without one, 10.7.

44,490 listings across 52 states and territories, 31,566 of them recorded with an all-gender restroom. Recorded is not the same as existing: the directory grows where people add listings, so read every number as coverage as much as provision. The method and its limits are below.

How this was counted

  • Listingsare places in Allgenda's directory with a restroom or a check on record, a city and a state the directory can place them in, and no open spam flag. Every such place counts, including those in towns too small for an indexed city page, and each is counted once per state even when it sits on two city pages.
  • All-gendermeans at least one of the place's restrooms is recorded as all-gender. A missing record is not a no, so the share is a floor.
  • Verified counts places whose newest check is the top tier (confidence 75 or more in how listings are verified). That includes the Refuge Restrooms import, a community-sourced dataset carried at full confidence; each listing shows that provenance.
  • Checked in the last 12 monthsuses the newest check's date. For imported listings that is the source's own last update.
  • Per 100,000 residentsdivides by the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimate for the state. Shares and rates are rounded.
  • Bathroom banis the Movement Advancement Project's category for the state as of October 21, 2026: a restriction on which restrooms transgender people may use in some or all government-owned settings. “States with a ban” are the 21 states in any ban category; DC and Puerto Rico are listed but kept out of the comparison.
  • What it can't say. The directory records what people and partners have added, so a low rate can mean few inclusive restrooms or few contributors, and large metros and campuses are covered more densely than small towns. The two-group difference is a description of the record, not a measurement of cause.
  • Edition. These figures were frozen on October 23, 2026 so a citation stays true. Each state page shows the live counts.
